Description
Abell 2744 galaxy cluster, composite image. Also known as Pandora's Cluster, this grouping of galaxies includes shockwaves from several collisions that set off radio (red) and X-ray (blue) emissions. This image combines radio data from the Very Large Array (VLA) with X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The optical data is from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Subaru telescopes. The VLA observations have revealed previously undetected regions where shocks accelerated subatomic particles, causing radio emission. Abell 2744 is nearly 4 billion light years distant, in the constellation of Sculptor. The results of these observations were published in 2017.
