Description
Kidney. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a kidney from a mouse. The cortex (dark pink) of the kidney consists mainly of blood vessels and filtering units. The filtering units are made up of a glomerulus (purple spheres) surrounded by a Bowman's capsule (white). The core of each glomerulus is formed of a tightly coiled capillary. Its function is to filter waste products from the blood. These drain through the proximal convoluted tubules (white tubes surrounding glomerulus) and loops of Henle in the renal pyramids (pink) into collecting ducts (light purple ovals). The waste leaves the kidney, as urine, through the renal pelvis (pale pink, right). Magnification: x6 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
