Artist's Description
Nile crocodile examination. Veterinarian handling a young Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) during an X-ray examination (machine at top, scans in background). This carnivorous predator reaches lengths of over six metres when fully grown. It inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers. The young grow from 30 centimetres to 1.2 metres in length over two years, before leaving the nest area. This examination is being carried out by Samuel Martin, director of La Ferme aux Crocodiles (founded 1994), a crocodile farm and research centre at Pierrelatte in southern France. Photographed in 2011.
