Neck muscles, computer artwork. The large opaque muscle across the upper back is the trapezius. Attached to the spine and ribs are the scalene muscles (posterior, medius and anterior). These muscles flex the head to the same side and elevate the first and second ribs. The opaque muscle attached to the skull is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, which acts to flex and rotate the neck. The broad muscle attached to the lower jaw is the platysma muscle, which acts to pull the mouth and lower jaw downwards.
