Description
Hydroplane racing. Hydroplane on the Detroit River, Detroit, Michigan, USA, during a qualifying lap for the Gold Cup Hydroplane races. A hydroplane is a high-speed motorboat that uses the water they are on for lift rather than buoyancy, as well as for propulsion and steering. At high speed the water is forced downwards by the boat's hull and exerts an upward force lifting most of the hull out of the water. This process is known as planing. Photographed in July 2005.
