Description
Maize stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through a maize plant stem (Zea mays). A vascular bundles (brown) can be seen containing xylem (larger openings, orange brown) and phloem (smaller openings, dark green) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant, while phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. The small green blobs (upper left and right) are chloroplasts, which capture energy from sunlight by photosynthesis. Magnification: x230 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
