Description
Treatment of reduced blood flow in polyvascular disease. Coloured angiogram of a deflated balloon stent in arteries in the upper chest (the supra-aortic arteries) of a 70-year-old woman with polyvascular disease. This condition involves arterial disease such as atherosclerosis in several parts of the body. Here, this has caused blockages and severe narrowing of the left subclavian and right subclavian arteries (centre), reducing the blood flow to the neck and head and causing dizziness and loss of pulse in the arms. This image shows the presence of a catheter guide wire (white) that has been inserted as part of an angioplasty treatment for this condition. A balloon stent has been inserted and is about to be inflated to widen the narrowed areas and restore the blood flow. This is a Palmaz Genesis stent, with dimensions 8 to 29 millimetres. Angiograms use a contrast dye to highlight blood vessels. This is a right anterior oblique view. For a series of images showing this condition before, during and after treatment, see images C038/8742 to C038/8745 and C038/8763 to C038/8768.
