Description
Environmental protest. People marching to Blair Mountain, West Virginia, USA, in protest against the use of mountaintop removal mining. This mining technique uses explosives to remove layers of rock and soil above a coal seam. The removed material is dumped into nearby valleys. This technique has serious environmental impacts, including loss of biodiversity, water pollution and air pollution. Blair Mountain, site of a historic 1921 battle between coal miners and the industry's hired gunmen, is now threatened with mountaintop removal. Blair, West Virginia
