Artist's Description
Chicken embryo. Light micrograph of a 60-hour-old chicken embryo (dark pink). This is the stage where there are 30-33 somites (vertebral segments). Surrounding the embryo are the arteries and veins within the yolk, such as the vitelline vessels that absorb nutrients, and the umbilical vessels for gas exchange with the shell membrane. The head is at upper left within the embryo. The body section is developing around the spinal cord and somites. The heart is between the brain and the body. Within the head, an eye (dark) and ear (between eye and brain) can be seen. Magnification: x3 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
