The membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules and controls the movement of substances in and out of cells. Shown is the lipidlayer (light blue), tunnel proteins (orange, in the foreground left and within the lipidlayer, a carrier protein (orange, in the foreground right). In the background carbohydrate chains (green), collagen (red) and fybronectin glycoprotein (orange).
