Description
Ventricles of brain. Coloured composite 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a human brain seen from the side, showing the ventricles (red). The front of the brain is at left. The four ventricles are cavities that circulate the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which cushions the brain from movements. The two large, curved lateral ventricles lie either side of the mid-line of the brain, one in each cerebral hemisphere. They communicate with the smaller third ventricle (centre left), which lies between and below them. This leads to the fourth ventricle (lower right) via a narrow channel (thin line), the cerebral aqueduct.
