Description
Royal Observatory, Greenwich. This observatory, in London, England, was founded in 1675. It was the first purpose-built research institution in Britain, and for centuries was the centre of astronomical and meteorological research in the UK. The turrets and time ball of Flamsteed House, the original observatory building, are at upper left. Later telescope domes are in the background at right, while the building in the foreground is Magnetic House (built in 1837). Magnetic House, made entirely of wood, was used to investigate magnetism. Photograph published in The Wonder and Glory of the Stars (Forbes, 1926).
