Description
Nile crocodile, skin examination. Veterinarian removing a bony scale (osteoderm) from a young Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) during a skin examination. Tests will also be carried out on the blood. This carnivorous predator reaches lengths of over six metres when fully grown. It inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers. The young grow from 30 centimetres to 1.2 metres in length over two years, before leaving the nest area. This examination is being carried out at La Ferme aux Crocodiles (founded 1994), a crocodile farm and research centre at Pierrelatte in southern France. Photographed in 2011.
