Limescale. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of limescale from a domestic kettle. Limescale, which occurs when hard water is boiled, consists mainly of calcium carbonate crystals that have precipitated out of the water. Magnification: x1500 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
