Feeding mosquito. Macrophotograph of an Anopheles gambiae mosquito. The female mosquito feeds on the blood of vertebrates, including humans, piercing the skin and sucking blood through the feeding tube (proboscis, black, upper to lower centre) on her head. She uses the blood meal when producing eggs. A. gambiae is the most important vector for the transmission of malaria to humans in Africa. Magnification unknown.
