Description
European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Computer artwork of ESO's planned E-ELT, compared to Big Ben (black), the 96-metre-tall clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London. Scheduled to be operational by 2018, the E-ELT will use adaptive optics and a segmented mirror to achieve a diameter of 42 metres, the largest of several planned ELTs. The primary mirror will consist of 1000 segments, each 1.45 metres wide, with adaptive optics making thousands of adjustments every second. The secondary mirror will be 6 metres wide. The European ELT location of Cerro Armazones, Chile, was selected in 2010.
