Description
Black hole. Computer model of the accretion disc around a rotating (Kerr) black hole. The amount of red shift (doppler shift) decreases from red to blue. Red shift occurs when a light source moves away from an observer, causing its wavelength to be increased. The black cross shape here is due to emitted light from inside the disc being scattered out of the line of sight by material on the disc's surface. Black holes are regions where the gravitational field is so strong that light cannot escape. Work done at the University of Utah, USA.
