Description
Aniline dyeing industry, 19th century. Illustration of distillation equipment used in the production of artificial dyes. These include aniline, a blue dye first isolated from indigo in the 1820s. Here, the dye is 'violet Hofmann', synthesised by German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann. These violet dyes were variants on the aniline blue dye. The industry was founded by Hofmann and Perkins in the 1850s. Artwork from volume 9 (1870) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
