Description
Ostrich. Close-up of the head of a male ostrich (Struthio camelus). The ostrich is the largest bird in the world, reaching heights of 2.5 metres and weights of 130 kilograms. It is also the only bird to have two toes (instead of the usual three). The ostrich is native to Africa, where it inhabits plains and savannahs, feeding on plants and seeds. The male is black and white with scarlet skin around the beak, while the female is a grayish brown colour. Although flightless, the ostrich can run at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour, making it the fastest bird on land.
