Description
Corn snake. Coloured X-ray showing the skeleton of the corn snake, Elaphe guttata, a constrictor snake which belongs to the colubrid family. This reptile has a long spine (purple) to which its ribs are attached. The corn snake feeds on rats and mice, killing them by wrapping its body around them and squeezing. Its jaw can dislocate so that the snake can open its mouth wide enough to swallow its prey whole. The corn snake lives in forests and around human settlements on the east coast of the United States of America.
