Artist's Description
Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) leaping as they swim to ride the bow wave of a passing boat. These dolphins may reach a length of just over 2 metres and weigh up to 140 kilograms. They inhabit offshore waters in warm seas, usually up to eight kilometres from shore, but come into shallow water seasonally. They live in groups of between 5 to 15 individuals, feeding on fish and squid. The young are born without spots, which gradually accumulate with age. Photographed off the Azores, a group of islands in the northern Atlantic Ocean.
