Artist's Description

2014 World Cup football aerodynamics. Since 2010, Adidas has worked with hundreds of players to develop this next-generation ball, the Brazuca. Here, NASA engineers are testing the aerodynamics of the ball by visualising the way air flows around it using smoke and green laser light. In comparison to the Jabulani ball of 2010, the Brazuca is more stable in the air and has a more predictable trajectory. It has six panels, as opposed to the Jabulani's eight. It also has longer, deeper seams, and thousands of tiny bumps on its surface. It is the most aerodynamically stable ball ever used in a World Cup tournament.
