Artist's Description
Universe's dark matter, Hubble COSMOS survey image. The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) used Hubble to build up a map of the amount of dark (non-baryonic) matter and normal matter in a region of the sky. Dark matter is a form of matter thought to comprise the bulk of the mass of the universe. Its presence can be inferred from the gravitational distortion of normal matter and light. This is the largest ever survey undertaken with the Hubble Space Telescope, involving 70 astronomers and nearly 1000 hours of observations. This region of the sky is in the constellation Sextens. The results were published in January 2007. For a normal matter map, see R980/222. For a 3D dark matter map, see R980/224.
