Sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS). Roadside drainage system in a newly built town. This swale-like ditch, an example of a roadside verge soakaway, helps to reduce the risk of flooding from excess rainfall. Low stone culverts at intervals allow pedestrians to cross the ditch when it is carrying water. Photographed in 2013 in Buckshaw Village, Lancashire, UK.
