Artist's Description

Sunset from space. Sun setting behind the limb of the Earth as seen from the Space Shuttle Columbia. The tops of thunderclouds (centre right) are seen towering high into the atmosphere. The glow of the Sun is also seen reflecting off the upper layers of the atmosphere, providing a sharp dividing line between the Earth and space. Photographed during mission STS-109 (1-12 March 2002), while Columbia was orbiting over the Java Sea near Indonesia.
