Description
Spinal stenosis after surgery. Frontal X-ray of the lumbar spine of a 49-year-old patient after lumbar decompressive laminectomy surgery and arthrodesis to correct spinal stenosis, showing metal plates (white) implanted between the T11 and L2 vertebrae. Spinal stenosis is an abnormal narrowing (stenosis) of the spinal canal. This causes a restriction to the spinal canal and affects neurological function. Lumbar decompressive laminectomy involves the removal of the roof of bone overlying the spinal canal and thickened ligaments in order to decompress the nerves. Here, the implanted plates are being used to aid arthrodesis - the artificial induction of bone growth in a joint - in order to prevent the spinal canal from narrowing again.
