Description
San Andreas fault. True-colour radar-generated image looking south-east over the Temblor mountain range (lower left) near Bakersfield, California, USA. The San Andreas fault is the linear feature (white line) to the right of the mountains. To its right is the Carrizo Plain. The San Andreas fault is the active tectonic boundary between the North American tectonic plate (left) and the Pacific tectonic plate (right). It causes major earthquakes in the region. This image was obtained by draping visual Landsat satellite data over topographical radar data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM, Space Shuttle Endeavour, February 2000).
