Artist's Description

Iron oxide crystals in a rust deposit. Iron, steel and many ferrous metals will rust when exposed to oxygen in the air. Unsightly to the naked eye, these rust crystals are spectacular when viewed using a scanning electron microscope. Rust has vastly inferior mechanical properties to iron and steel, causing catastrophic failure as well as an unsightly appearance. Image width is 646 microns.
