Description
Mountaintop removal coal mining. This mining technique uses explosives to remove layers of rock and soil above a coal seam. The removed material is dumped into nearby valleys. This technique has serious environmental impacts, including loss of biodiversity, water pollution and air pollution. This mine, the Samples mine in Whitesville, West Virginia, USA, has been temporarily closed due to declining demand for coal.
