Human brain. Computer artwork of a section through the human brain woth the limbic system, brain stem and olfactory nerve highlighted (red). The limbic system is a primitive part of the brain involved in emotions, learning and the formation of memories. At centre is the putamen (oval), which regulates movements and influences learning. At bottom is the brainstem, which controls automatic functions, sleep and arousal and relays messages from the brain to the spinal cord. The olfactory nerve (bottom left) carries scent information from the nose to the brain.
