Artist's Description
Hatchling yellow-spotted river turtle. Underside of a one month old yellow-spotted river turtle (Podocnemis unifilis). Yellow-spotted river turtles are one of the largest South American river turtles. They can grow up to 45 centimetres long and weigh up to 8 kilograms. The females lay two clutches of eggs each year in nests built in sandy areas on the banks of rivers. Each clutch can contain 4 to 35 eggs. Laying takes place at the peak of the dry season so that the nest will not be washed away by rain.
