Global botanical geography. 19th-century botanical and geographical illustration depicting the distribution and variation in plant types on mountain habitats worldwide and at different latitudes and climates (tropical, temperate, polar). From left, the examples are: the Andes, Tenerife, the Himalayas, the Alps and Pyrenees, and Lapland. Elevations are given in feet, with yearly weather This work, by Scottish geographer Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871), was based on work by German geographers Alexander von Humboldt and Heinrich Berghaus. It was published in 'The Physical Atlas' (1848). For the full page of maps and illustrations, see C026/8518.
