Description
Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) undertaking a bowing display. The penguins use their heads and beaks to point at nest or feet of the other bird. This ritual strengthens the bond between partners. The gentoo penguin grows up to 70 centimetres tall and can weigh up to 6 kilograms. It feeds on plankton, fish and squid. Its elongated bill allows it to feed on larger prey than many other penguin species. Gentoo penguins live in large colonies on bare hillsides and the beaches of Antarctic islands. Photographed on South Georgia Island, Antarctica.
