Artist's Description
Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II fighter jet landing during testing. This was the first time a vertical landing had been attempted at night. This model is the short take-off and vertical landing variant (STOVL). The F-35 is a fifth-generation, single-engined aircraft. The F-35B began testing in 2008, which lead to a number of redesigns. Development costs have been shared between the USA and nine other nations including the UK. The Royal Air Force and Royal Navy plan to procure 138 of the aircraft for use on aircraft carriers. Photographed using infrared night vision camera on 2nd April 2013 at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, USA.
