Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) Dogfish (shark) denticles on skin. Squalus acanthias, is one of the best known species of the Squalidae (dogfish) family of sharks. The spiny dogfish is also known as a spurdog, mud shark, or piked dogfish and is a small demersal shark of temperate continental shelf seas worldwide. Squalus acanthias has a specific morphology of having two spines (one anterior to each dorsal fin) and lacks an anal fin. Spiny dogfish in the northern Pacific Ocean have recently be revaluated and found to constitute a separate species, now known as Pacific Spiny Dogfish (Squalus suckleyi). Shark skin is covered by tiny flat V-shaped scales, called dermal denticles, that are more like teeth than fish scales. Magnification: x39 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
