Artist's Description

Dodo model. This is a reconstruction of what was thought to be the appearance of the dodo (Raphus cucullatus). Roughly the size of a swan, this bird was heavily-built, clumsy and flightless. It was found on the island of Mauritius and became extinct around 1681 following the arrival of humans. No intact skins survive and models are reconstructions based on the skeleton and using other bird feathers. This model is displayed in the Bird Gallery at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
