Artist's Description
DNA molecule. Computer molecular graphic of a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) molecule, showing the chemical groups that a protein may use to identify a specific sequence of bases when it binds to DNA. DNA encodes an organism's hereditary characterist- ics. It has 2 sugar-phosphate backbones which wind around each other to form a double helix shape. The two backbones are bound together by nucleotide bases, the exact sequence of which along the mole- cule determines the genetic code. The groups on the edges of base pairs are colour-coded: oxygen (red) & some hydrogens (blue) can form a hydrogen bond with an approaching protein, whilst methyl groups and some hydrogens (both yellow) cannot.
