DNA molecule. Computer artwork of a strand of beta DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Atoms are depicted as sticks and spheres of dots. The sugar-phosphate backbone of the DNA molecule has a white skeleton with pale green dots here. The nucleotide bases linking the strands contain nitrogen (orange), and appear predominantly that colour. The DNA molecule is composed of two spiral sugar-phosphate strands of atoms joined by the interactions of cross- linking bases between them. The sequence of bases along the strands makes up the genetic code in the form of genes, specific segments of DNA. Genes determine every characteristic of an individual. Beta DNA spirals clockwise when seen from above.
