Artist's Description

Alien worlds. Artwork of the hypothetical Earth-like moon of an extrasolar planet orbiting the star HD 177830 (upper left). The planet (brown) is seen over the moon's horizon, encircled by a large ring system. HD 177830 is 190 light years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. In November 1999, a planet was found to be orbiting the star, taking 407 days. The planet is nearly 50 per cent more massive than Jupiter. Such extrasolar planets are detected by observing the wobble they impart on their star's motion through space.
