Description
Drawings of Mars, by the British clergyman and astronomer Thomas William Webb (1807-1885). Dates and times for the 30 images are provided from number 11 onwards (September to November). Shading on the drawings shows the highland and lowland areas of Mars. Early observations of the planets with telescopes began with Galileo in 1610. More detailed observations were made over the following centuries as telescope design improved. In the 20th and 21st centuries, detailed maps of the surface of Mars have been obtained by space probes.
