Description
19th century abortion clinic. Mid-19th century French artwork of a pregnant woman entering an illegal abortion house. A nurse awaits her inside the building. Abortion was criminalised in France at the beginning of the 19th century. It was not until the 20th century that abortion was legalised in many countries. This allowed the practice to be regulated, rather than carried out in back streets and in unhygienic conditions, as here.
