1920s box camera. Young girl with a box camera in 1922. She is sitting on the steps of the White House, Washington, DC, USA, waiting to photograph the US President Warren G. Harding (1865-1923). Box cameras were a type of early portable camera. Box cameras used a simple lens, and lacked features such as a flash, or control over aperture size and shutter speed. A box camera using roll film was introduced by Kodak in 1888, but it was not until the 1950s that box cameras with flashes were produced, so the use of box cameras was limited to outdoor photography. The girl is Miss Tarkington, daughter of Mrs W. Tarkington Jr. Photographed on 29th June 1922.
