Artist's Description

Asylum. Female patient chained to a post in an 18th century mental asylum. Methods of constraint such as this were often used because patients were seen as being dangerous. It also made the job easier for the few warders assigned to look after the patients. In 1792, the French physician Philippe Pinel was the first to realise that such deprivation of movement and light actually worsened patients' mental conditions.
