Artist's Description

Dampier's drawings, from Concise Voyages edition of Dampier 1735 Continuation of a Voyage to New Holland in the year 1699". London 1729. William Dampier, was a bucaneer who was described as "a piriate of exquisite mind". His careful naturalistic observations of areas like New Guinea and the Galapagos island form some of the first reliable accounts of the wildlife of those remote places. Darwin was still using a copy of Dampier's voyages when he himself sailed on the Beagle, referring to him as "dear old Dampier". Shown here are a pacific booby, blue crowned pigeon, (possibly a frigate bird, but pouch not eye would be red), Blythes hornbill and fruit bat. These are the first recorded images of Blythe's Hornbill and the Blue Crowned Pigeon."
