Description
World map. 16th century Dutch map showing the routes taken by Sir Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish on their voyages round the world, from 1577 to 1580 and 1586 to 1588, respectively. At left are the continents of Asia and North America, and a large landmass, Terra Australis, that was thought to extend to the far south. At right are South America, Africa and Europe. In the corners of the map, small pictures illustrate Drake's ships entering various harbours or cast upon rocks. This map was created in around 1595 by Jodocus Hondius, who continued the work of Gerard Mercator.
