Vanity Fair Portrait from the Men of the Day" series 1869 by Ape (illustrator). Captioned "God Bless the Duke of Argyll". Poking a little fun at the pious, short but rather self-important Duke. George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll 30 April 1823 – 24 April 1900. A Fellow of the Royal Society (1851), publiciser of science and religiously pious member of the aristocracy- though he stood firmly in opposition to Darwin and Huxley, who because of his small stature they referred to as "The Dukelet". His most important books were The Reign of Law. 1867 London: Strahan and Primeval Man: An Examination of some Recent Speculations. 1869 New York: Routledge."
