Description
Orchid flowers (Phaius tankervilliae). The flowers have a specialised petal called a lip. Here it is pink/white and tube shaped. The upper flower is seen from the front. The lower flower is seen from the side. The lip attracts pollinators and guides them towards the reproductive parts. This orchid is found in tropical Australia, northwards to the Asian mainland and eastwards to the Pacific islands. This specimen is from Thailand. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
