Artist's Description
Kidney. Light micrograph of a vertical section through a whole kidney. The kidney is surrounded by a capsule (dark purple) under which is the cortex (deep red) consisting mainly of blood vessels and the filtering units (Bowman's capsules). The central medulla (light pink) is made up of tubes conveying urine to the medullary pyramids, which open into the renal pelvis (two white spaces, centre right). From here, urine drains into the ureter and to the bladder. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
