Description
William Crawford Gorgas (1854-1920), US physician, in academic dress. Gorgas became Surgeon-General of the USA in 1914. He was a medical doctor and professor at Columbia, New York, USA. While he was stationed in Cuba, he had learnt of research that showed that mosquitoes transmitted yellow fever. Later, in Panama, Gorgas implemented sanitation programs to prevent the spread of mosquitoes, and thus reduced the impact of yellow fever and malaria on the US workers building the Panama Canal (1904-1914). French efforts in the 1880s to build the canal had failed due to outbreaks of such diseases. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
