Description
Volcanic gas eruption. Sunlit vapour clouds rising from the summit craters of Mount Etna, a volcano on the Italian island of Sicily. Etna stands 3323 metres tall, and is the largest active volcano in Europe. Its continual mild activity takes the form of relatively gentle lava flows and degassing, the latter activity producing the vapour clouds seen. This degassing avoids the gas build-up that can lead to explosive eruptions. Photographed in 2000.
